New publication from the HEMOTION trial

A new sub-study from the multicenter randomized HEMOTION trial has been published in Intensive Care Medicine. This secondary analysis evaluated whether the presence of multiple trauma modifies the effect of liberal (hemoglobin threshold ≤10 g/dL) versus restrictive (≤7 g/dL) transfusion strategies in adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

Using data from the 742 participants enrolled in the HEMOTION trial, investigators examined several definitions of multiple trauma, including the presence of severe extracranial injuries, the need for emergency extracranial surgery, or spinal cord injury with neurological deficit.

The results showed that multiple trauma status did not modify the effect of transfusion strategies on neurological outcomes at 6 months, measured by the Glasgow Outcome Scale–Extended (GOS-E). However, a potential interaction among patients requiring emergency extracranial surgery warrants further investigation in future studies.
