Dr. Winston got his BSc (Honours) at the University of Calgary in 198o, MD (with Distinction) in 1984 from the University of Alberta. He did a rotating internship at the University of Ottawa, completed Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto in 1988, Respirology training in 1990 and Critical Care Training at the University of Manitoba in 1991. He then did Fellowship training at National Jewish Hospital in Denver (University of Colorado) in molecular biology. Dr. Winston moved to Calgary where he began his practice as a clinician scientist in Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine in June 1995.

Research:

The research focus in Dr. Winston’s laboratory primarily involves using metabolomics to study human diseases in Critical Care. His studies focus on metabolomics in sepsis, lung injury (ARDS) and head injury (traumatic brain injury, TBI). In order to do this research he has created a tissue bank for intensive care unit (ICU) related disease processes.

He describes his research as primarily focused on translational research on clinically relevant Critical Care and Pulmonary disease processes.
