Noseworthy, Michael

Dr. Michael D. Noseworthy PhD PEng is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster University. He has been the Director of Imaging Physics and Engineering at the Imaging Research Centre, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton since 2003 and more recently helped found the Centre for Integrative and Advanced Medical Imaging (CIAMI) at McMaster University in 2024. Dr. Noseworthy also has Special Professional Staff status at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) in both Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and is the Associate Chair (Research) in the department of Medical Imaging. Dr. Noseworthy’s research focuses on personalized brain diagnostics using medical imaging technology. His work involves the development and deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms that use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to pinpoint brain anomalies and their severity. The use of Big Data and MRI standardization/harmonization is key to such work, which Dr. Noseworthy’s group embraces. He also explores the brain using complex systems mathematics and chaos theory. A considerable amount of his research also revolves around the development of MRI technology (RF hardware and MRI pulse sequences) for non-proton imaging (e.g. sodium-23, phosphorous-31, and xenon-129 MRI) which he combines with compressed sensing and deep learning reconstruction. He has been involved in concussion research for over a decade and has used his technology to evaluate a wide breadth of patients from children to adults, and has also helped in the assessment of professional athletes in Canada and abroad.
